ECR, SFHR Planning to Merge in 2015

collageMultiple media outlets have reported that Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing and Ed Carpenter Racing will be merging next season. The move makes sense for the two single-car teams. The only issue is determining which engine manufacturer the new team will run. SFHR currently uses Honda, while ECR is with Chevrolet. Based upon the current ratio in the series, they’ll likely be with the bow tie. No one at ECR has confirmed the potential merger, but the majority owner of SFHR has confirmed the move to both Curt Cavin and Robin Miller.

This major move will be beneficial for all involved. Despite the three wins for ECR this season, single-car teams generally have a much tougher time keeping their heads above water. It’s likely that ECR will continue to have Ed Carpenter do the ovals next season, while Mike Conway drives the car for the rest of the races. If Conway doesn’t return, Ed will likely have a few other options for someone to fill that void. As for Josef Newgarden, the current SFHR driver’s future is still up in the air. He has not yet signed with a team for the 2015 season. Newgarden, considered one of the best young talents in the sport, is still searching for his first win – nearly grabbing it at Mid-Ohio two weeks ago.

An official announcement could come this weekend at Milwaukee. Andretti Autosport has already scheduled a press conference for Sunday to announce the re-signing of driver Ryan Hunter-Reay. The expected name of the new merged team is CFH Racing (Carpenter Fisher Hartman Racing) The ABC Supply Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee begins at 3 PM ET tomorrow on NBC Sports Network. Qualifying for the race in West Allis, Wisconsin will take place later today.
