Josef Newgarden on Pole at Milwaukee

Earlier this year, Josef Newgarden won his first Verizon IndyCar Series race. He’s won another one since then, and today he captured his first career Pole. Newgarden was the fastest driver in both practice sessions at Milwaukee, and went for the trifecta today in qualifying. Starting alongside Josef on the front row will be Ryan Briscoe. Behind them is a Ganassi duo in Row 2, with Sage Karam and Tony Kanaan. James Jakes and Graham Rahal will start in Row 3 for today’s race.

In four races at the Milwaukee Mile, Newgarden has started 17th, 8th, 5th, and now 1st. His finishes have improved as well – 25th, 11th, and 5th last year. He’ll try to match what Will Power did here last year, winning the race from Pole position.

With practice, qualifying, and the race all on today’s schedule, things were a little hectic. Team Penske had some issues, and it proved costly. Helio Castroneves will start last in today’s race, as his team was late on arrival for tech and qualifying inspection.

Despite never finishing in the top-five in his five CART races here, Kanaan does have seven top-four finishes (including two wins) at the Milwaukee Mile. Ryan Hunter-Reay has had a dreadful season, but he has won here three times. It’s been feast or famine for him here though, as his other six finishes here are 16th, 17th, 15th, 12th, 26th, and 21st respectively. Ed Carpenter will start his 11th career race here, but is still searching for his first top-five finish. He qualified a disappointing 22nd today, but will likely get some advice from his pole-sitting teammate.

The race distance is 250 laps, which is 253.75 miles around the famous one mile oval. Power won the race last year from Pole position. Qualifying is always important, but even more so here judging on the recent history of this race. Eight of the last nine races at Milwaukee have been won by a driver starting in the first two rows.

Coverage for the ABC Supply Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee begins later today at 5 PM ET on NBCSN.
