Al Unser Sr Replicarz Giveaway

The latest Replicarz diecast giveaway is one of the most iconic machines to ever win the Indianapolis 500. The story behind the 1987 race is something you would only find in a movie. There were 25 crashes during the Month of May, and only 11 cars ended up finishing the race. When Danny Ongais crashed on Day 6 of practice, he suffered a concussion and was unable to drive the rest of the month. Roger Penske had to find a driver, and he knew just where to look.

Al Unser drove for The Captain in the 500 four years prior to 1987 and finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th before a mechanical issue in the 1986 race. The new Penske PC16 car had proven to be unreliable, so Roger made the decision to go back to the 1986 March-Cosworth. The first 1986 March arrived on Fast Friday, and Rick Mears and Danny Sullivan actually flipped a coin to see who would get to drive it first. The third car for Unser was on display at a Sheraton hotel in Reading, Pennsylvania. The team retrieved the car from the hotel, and the rest is history.

The 71st running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing was shaping up quite nicely for Mario Andretti. He dominated practice during the month and qualified on pole position. Mario led 170 of the 180 laps that he completed, but an ignition issue ended his hopes of winning a second 500. After starting the race in 20th position, Unser worked his way toward the front of the field and took the lead with 18 laps remaining. He took the checkered flag five days before his 48th birthday, and at the time, became only the second person to ever win the Indianapolis 500 four times.

This is the 16th Replicarz diecast giveaway that I have been able to do. Each one is special because of the story behind the race and the history that it represents. If you know anything about Replicarz, it is that they are meticulous in the details of their models. From the small engine components to the gauges inside the cockpit to the exact color of paint used, it truly is a replica of the actual car. I particularly like the red seat belt straps on this March that stand out quite nicely against the yellow body.

The rules for the giveaway are simple. Follow Replicarz and Chad on Twitter, then Retweet and Like the tweet linked to this post to be entered. One random winner will be chosen on Saturday, February 6 at 5 PM ET. The winner will be announced, then contacted through direct message so that I can get the model shipped to their address. Should the winner not respond within 24 hours, another person will be selected.
